David Garets, FHIMSS, and HIMSS Board Chair, welcomes conference attendees.

ORLANDO, FL – Focusing on the contributions of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and its members as leaders of change, Dave Garets, FHIMSS, and the HIMSS board chair, will welcome attendees to the opening session of the 2004 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition. The session begins at 8 a.m. in the General Session room, South Exhibit Hall, which is located on the lower level of the Orange County Convention Center.

"What we've already achieved has helped us build a strong foundation for the future as the leader of leaders," he states in his welcome speech.

"What was accomplished, what we're offering this week, and what will be accomplished in the future, through HIMSS and all of you as members of HIMSS, demonstrates that this is an organization of leaders for leaders in healthcare information technology."

Examples of some of the Society's strategic initiatives during 2003 that Garets will cite in his presentation include participation in the effort to establish an EHR uniform standard and sponsorship of the Health Level 7 (HL7) EHR Model Standard; ongoing work with Integrating the Health-care Enterprise (IHE); advocacy efforts related to key legislation on e-prescribing, the National Healthcare Information Infrastructure (NHII), and patient safety; and continued outreach to members through chapter and special interest groups (SIGs) as well as collaboration through its member task forces, work groups and committees.

"HIMSS can build leaders and lead change through community, collaboration, communication, contract, connection and contact."

Garets will focus on these attributes of HIMSS by outlining how HIMSS and its members can help lead change.

"No matter what programs you choose, you'll notice HIMSS quality. Even more, you'll notice the attitudes captured so well in those Cs that I spoke about: community, collaboration, communication, contract, connection and contact. HIMSS is here for you, the thought leader, the healthcare leader. This week, on through 2004, and into the coming years, we can make a difference in healthcare IT.

"We embrace you – the healthcare IT leader – as an individual and as a member of the healthcare IT community.

"With you and through you, nothing is impossible."
