Hybrid cloud deployment models—a combination of private and public cloud resources—are becoming the new normal for organizations in healthcare and other sectors of the economy trying to determine how best to arrange their IT systems.
As Jon Toor, CMO at Cloudian, a data storage provider, recently put it in a survey of the hybrid landscape at Datamation, “Cloud vs. on-prem does not have to be an ‘either/or’ decision, particularly for data protection in a hybrid cloud. Here, data is stored to an on-prem object storage system and then replicated to a low-cost cloud archive . . . for disaster recovery purposes.”
That’s just one of the scenarios the Datamation piece explores in looking at hybrid trends.
Another is the desire IT managers have for better analytics opportunities.
According Steve Pao, CMO of Igneous Systems, a hybrid cloud provider, the fact is that “the driver for hybrid cloud storage is the new uses of data for enhanced analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. How hybrid cloud storage integrates into new compute contexts, such as event-driven computing and microservices, should be a critical factor in enterprise architecture decisions.”
Similarly, Pao noted, storage planning for hybrid clouds can’t be done without also considering the software and networking repercussions.
“Software is a problem because it needs to help with search and discovery of data, now spread across multiple locations,” said Pao. “Networking is a problem because, despite some really good software optimization in place to minimize traffic, data movement is ultimately constrained by the speed of light.”
Hybrid cloud scenarios are also being used to address the need in research and other facilities for periodic, high-speed compute capabilities. According to Yuval Dimnik, founder of NooBaa, a storage and network provider, so-called “cloud bursting” has become a major trend as hybrid cloud storage has become a reality in many enterprises and the cloud no longer just being used as an archive. “What this entails is using the cloud to run workloads that are limited in time, based on part of the data, taking advantage of a scalable compute, that is not needed on a daily basis.
This is true for research workloads, as well as media & entertainment.”
Finally, the rapid adoption of hybrid cloud storage is accelerating the switch to software-defined storage (SDS) solutions, noted Pierre Evenou, CEO of Rozo Systems, a storage software provider.
