I spent the bulk of the last week in Las Vegas attending the Consumer Electronics Show. If there were other academically-oriented physicians attending, I didn’t find them. There seems to be an enormous gulf between academic medicine and consumerism, but it turns out that there are several good reasons to be there and I hope more HIT-oriented care providers will go next year.

CareView Communications, Inc. ("CareView" or the "Company") (OTCQB: CRVW), an information technology provider to the healthcare industry, announced today the execution of pilot agreements with Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center ("Spring Valley Hospital"), a 231-bed hospital, and Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center ("Desert Springs Hospital"), a 293-bed hospital, which comprise two of five Las Vegas hospitals owned by Universal Health Services, Inc. ("UHS").

Teladoc, which bills itself as the nation's first and largest telehealth provider, announced a new strategic partnership with technology company HealthSpot. The initiative, executives say, will enhance Teladoc's solution with the ability to offer an on-site option through HealthSpot's telehealth system, which provides medical diagnostic technology in a private, walk-in kiosk: the HealthSpot Station.

MMRGlobal, Inc. (OTCQB: MMRF) ("MMR") today announced that it has received a Notice of Allowance, U.S. Serial No. 13/352,068, from the United States Patent and Trademark Office which further expands the Company's "Method and System for Providing Online Medical Records." In short, the most recent allowed application expands MMR's patent portfolio with additional claims directed toward a Web-based service to access and collect health records from different types of service providers, including, but not limited to, retail pharmacies as well as hospitals, providers and other healthcare professionals providing services over the Internet. The health records, including prescriptions, may be collected from service providers using various types of messaging including email, facsimile, uploads, and voice. Moreover, there are additional claims in the newly allowed patent application related to collecting insurance information, calendaring, and other features, which are already provided by MMR's products and services.

MMRGlobal, Inc. MMRF -0.60% ("MMR") today announced that it is already in the process of delivering the second group of 25 MMRPro systems pursuant to an agreement with a reseller of medical products and services to healthcare professionals as announced by the Company on October 1, 2012. The contract calls for an initial 75 units, of which the first 50 will have been delivered by the end of this quarter and the remaining 25 in the first quarter of 2013. Starting in the second quarter of next year, the agreement calls for the reseller to purchase or license a guaranteed minimum of 100 additional MMRPro systems per quarter over the life of the three-year contract, which represents a minimum of $5 million to $16.8 million in revenues in addition to $1,050,000 for the first 75 units. MMR plans on issuing a joint press release as early as next week with additional details announced leading up to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas January 8-11 and a planned press conference at HIMSS 2013 in New Orleans in March.

Epocrates officials were showing off an iPad version of their new electronic health record at the HIMSS12 Conference and Exhibition in Las Vegas, Feb.20-24. The sleek, easy-to-use EHR app, which operated on screen touches rather than mouse clicks, seemed poised to make a splash in an ever-crowded field, which numbers more than 300 offerings at last count.
