Amcom Software, Inc. today announced that it is collaborating with Maimonides Medical Center to deliver the Amcom Duty Hours Tracking solution. The new software enables teaching hospitals to monitor and report on residents’ hours in accordance with the ACGME’s 2011 regulations. For Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Maimonides, the Amcom solution will simplify compliance and administration throughout the organization, which annually trains 450 residents in 70 specialties.

IBM has convened the Watson Healthcare Advisory Board. The panel members include medical leaders with expertise in areas such as primary care, oncology and biomedical informatics. Officials say they'll provide IBM with insights on healthcare issues that could be positively impacted by Watson.

Farzad Mostashari, MD, ScM, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology added an unexpected twist to the HIMSS12 ONC area of the Interoperability Showcase last week by inviting all of the demonstrators in this area to try to meet a technical challenge. MedAllies stepped up to meet the challenge and did so in under an hour.

Managing populations – whether an aggregation of patients or a physical community – is a burgeoning field in healthcare as a way to improve care while containing costs. Many of the IT initiatives currently underway are related to population health in one way or another: electronic health records, meaningful use, interoperability, accountable care organizations, disease state management, pay-for-performance and patient-centered medical home all have elements that relate to managing patients in groups.

Quality Systems, Inc. announced that its dental unit, QSIDental, will partner Suni Medical Imaging, which develops digital radiography products for dental professionals. Under the agreement, dental practices, academic institutions and more can integrate Suni's technology with QSIDental's solutions, including the NextGen electronic dental record.

What with primary season in full swing, if there’s one thing the Republican candidates agree on it’s that, if elected, each would work to repeal health reform. Campaign promises are one thing. But since none of the remaining candidates have yet offered any kind of detailed replacement plan, could they actually repeal or otherwise thwart health reform?
