Orcas Family Health Center Installs First Ultrasound System on Island

March 23, 2009 | Industry News Release
Source: Healthcare IT News

ORCAS ISLANDS, Wash – The largest island in the San Juan Island chain, Orcas Island, has recently added state-of-the-art, diagnostic ultrasound to its healthcare services. Located in the northwest corner of Washington State, the Orcas Family Health Center (OFHC), a certified rural health clinic and primary public health facility serving residents of Orcas Island, purchased a high-end, reconditioned Philips HDI 5000 unit from MedPro Imaging, a premier provider of economical ultrasound solutions. The system is the only ultrasound unit available for diagnostic imaging on the island.

"We were in need of a high-end ultrasound system for some time," said

David Shinstrom , MD, ABFM, director of OFHC. "MedPro worked with us extensively in analyzing both our clinical and economic needs in order for us to choose the right system. We eventually selected the HDI 5000 which offered an excellent solution for both the imaging needs of our patients and our own economic parameters."

The HDI 5000 offers advanced ultrasound imaging and covers a wide variety of applications. These include OB/GYN, cardiac, abdominal, vascular and muscular skeletal ultrasonic analysis which the Clinic can provide area patients.

The Orcas Family Health Center is a charitable, non-profit rural health center providing access to primary healthcare and related medical services for the approximately 5,000 residents of Orcas Island. The Clinic is committed to servicing rural and underserved communities that face economic challenges. The OFHC welcomes all people regardless of their medical insurance status or ability to pay.

"Previously, we needed to refer patients requiring an ultrasound exam to a facility on the mainland," said Shinstrom. "Not only was this inconvenient for the patient, but certainly not as ideal as having our own system. Now, we are able to provide more immediate analysis which greatly aids in making faster diagnoses, allowing us to begin treatment sooner and enhance patient outcomes."

The Wisconsin-based MedPro markets ultrasound products and services in 17 countries, globally. MedPro Imaging offers new and used options in ultrasound systems, transducers and parts. The Company is an authorized GE national distributor and also offers additional products which focus on other leading manufacturers of ultrasound systems. These include Siemens, Sonosite, ATL/Philips, Mindray, and other highly trusted brands. The Company also now is distributing MedStreaming PACS (Picture Archiving and Communications System) as part of its ultrasound image archiving solutions.

"MedPro has been expanding rapidly since its inception in 2005," said

Keith Rubenstein , senior vice president, marketing and sales for MedPro. "Our mission is to provide the highest integrity service, offering customers the most appropriate solutions for the customer's specific imaging and image management needs. We are honored to be a part of Dr. Shinstrom's OFHC team and the commitment to provide outstanding patient care on Orcas Island."
