CHICAGO – The Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT) is seeking senior healthcare executives to serve on its voluntary Board of Trustees and Board of Commissioners.

CCHIT is one of two organizations – so far – designated an authorized testing and certification body by the federal government. The other is the Drummond Group.

The nine-member Board of Trustees has fiduciary responsibility and provides leadership in the areas of fiscal oversight and stewardship of assets, organizational strategy, evaluation of senior management, and resolution of any conflicts of interest involving the commission's management and its 19-member board of commissioners.

The Board of Commissioners oversees the development of its independently developed criteria by its voluntary multi-stakeholder work groups, provides strategic direction and ensures the objectivity and credibility of the Commission.

"As we enter the next phase of our work which includes both our mission-driven focus on adoption of health IT and our separate status as an Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology Authorized Testing and Certification Body (ONC-ATCB), we continue to seek the participation of the healthcare community in the development of our new business strategies and programs," said Karen Bell, MD, chairwoman of the commission. "Now, more than ever, we look forward to guidance from those most experienced in the development, implementation, and use of evolving health information technologies."

Board members receive no financial compensation. Members of both boards are expected to declare any conflict of interest and cover traveling expenses. Trustees meet approximately six times during the year, with two face-to-face meetings held in Chicago. Commissioners meet 12 times during the year, with four to five face-to-face meetings held in Chicago.

The application period for both boards will be open Sept. 17 to Oct. 15, 2010, for terms that begin in January 2011. Candidates interested in applying for either board should apply on the CCHIT website. New appointments will be announced in December.
