CHICAGO – Merge Healthcare has successfully deployed an imaging distribution solution for the physicians of UMass Memorial Health Care, an academic medical center with five facilities serving Central New England. iConnect Access gives physicians the ability to view medical images directly from their electronic health record.

"We are thrilled with the success we’ve experienced using the iConnect Access viewer,” said William Corbett, MD, vice president community practices for UMass Memorial Health Care. “Now, every physician has the ability to view images wherever needed, right within our Allscripts EHR. This provides our clinicians significant benefit over just having access to the written report, while also enhancing their interactions with our patients.”

Merge’s iConnect Access is a zero-footprint, zero-download DICOM and XDS viewer that enables diagnostic quality image review for referring physicians. The viewer is part of the broader Merge iConnect solution, an interoperability suite that allows providers to view existing images and content, regardless of the multiple applications in which the images are stored. Integrating iConnect into broader HIT systems, such as EHRs, enables physicians to have a complete view of the patient, including images, results, demographics and more.

“We’ve previously partnered with Merge for our cardiology imaging applications so we knew we could leverage their expertise to deliver the images our physicians need at the point of care,” said Richard Cramer, associate CIO for Operations for UMass Memorial Health Care. “Merge’s image distribution integration with our EHR was a seamless fit with our other solutions and has greatly improved the clinical workflow for our physicians.”

“Our partnership with UMass Memorial Health Care is exciting as it demonstrates the power the images play in truly delivering a connected community,” said Merge CEO Jeff Surges. “Meaningful use requirements will increasingly include distribution of diagnostic testing results. Medical images are tough to manage, and Merge has this figured out. As this successful deployment at UMass Memorial Health Care demonstrates, we can now help providers better meet Meaningful Use and deliver more timely patient care.”

Fergal Emm says: Health and safety Toronto
March 07, 2011 | 7:34AM GMT

The safety culture of an organization is the product of individual and group values, attitudes, perceptions, competencies and patterns of behavior that determine the commitment to, and the style and proficiency of, an organization’s health and safety management. It is important to identify the perception of the organization’s safety culture as it represents a critical factor influencing multiple aspects of human performance and organizational safety. There is now a move to apply the concept of safety culture at the individual level. Mearns et al.,highlight that although safety culture was a concept originally used to describe the inadequacies of safety management that result in major disasters, it is interesting that the concept is now being applied to explain accidents at the individual level.A lot of attention has focused on the causes of occupational incidents. When incidents occur in the workplace it is important to understand what factors (human, technical, organizational) may have contributed to the outcome in order to avoid similar incidents in the future. Through developing an understanding of why and how incidents occur, appropriate methods for incident prevention can be developed. However, a number of major disasters have brought attention to the impact of organizational factors (i.e. policies and procedures)on the outcome of safety performance, with numerous inquiries identifying safety culture as having a definitive impact on the outcome of the disaster. Nice information.
