'Products' spotlight attracts hundreds of vendors

May 15, 2007 | Jack Beaudoin, President
From the February 2006 print issue

If there seem to be more new products at the 2006 HIMSS Annual Conference than in past years, there are two good reasons for that.

First, there ARE more new products this year than in years past. And second, HIMSS officials decided to make it easier for exhibitors to get the word out about products that are debuting at the show.

In 2006, for example, HIMSS created the “New Products and Solutions Spotlight” program. In one database, HIMSS has gathered more than 300 new product descriptions from about 200 vendors. That database will power plasma screen displays throughout the convention center, as well as an online resource on the conference Web site. It also constitutes the bulk of the new product descriptions you can find on these pages.

Why the big effort? It's been proven that one of the reasons attendees come to HIMSS is to research new products, says HIMSS exhibition manager Elli Miller. Miller's observations are backed up by the data. According to a survey conducted by Healthcare IT News in January, researching vendors and products is the main reason 31.2 percent of attendees give for their presence in San Diego this week (professional development ran a close second at 28.4 percent).

"New technology displays are my main reason to attending," said LTC Enrique Rivera Jr. of the U.S. Army. "I am looking for what is going to be the future of IM/IT systems; HIMSS provides tremendous opportunity to do business with the right people."

Other survey respondents certainly shared that sentiment, noting that HIMSS is a great place to bone up on what's new. "I'm interested in new technologies that vendors are offering," said Robin Kimple of Wellspan Health, "or how they are integrating new technologies into their applications."

"I am the EMR advisor for Louisiana Health Care Review and working on the DOQ-IT project," said Jeanie Berg of Louisiana Health Care Review, Inc. "Since we provide consulting service I like to keep up with what will be coming out on the market for equipment and EHR."

That's a consistent theme among attendees. "Healthcare IT is an ever-evolving industry," said Matthew L. Eversole of Catholic Healthcare Partners. "With the federal-level focus on reducing healthcare errors and cost through the (anticipate) increased efficiencies of IT, HIMSS provides a wonderful opportunity to see myriad solutions, ideas, and developments."
