Jason Hess, general manager of clinical research at Orem, Utah-based research firm KLAS, says he expects to see change in clinical information system sales going forward.
According to KLAS, reports show that if provider activity continues at its current rate, 2009 sales will “far exceed” those of 2008, which KLAS high- lighted in a July 2009 report. In 2008, vendors sold fewer new CIS contracts than they have in the past seven years. KLAS is due to come out with a new report focused on 2009 sales and looking forward to 2010 in a couple of months. In KLAS’s lastest report, “Physicians, Nurses, and EMR Adoption: Which solutions are CEOs Betting On?” researchers say major players like McKesson, Meditech and Siemens are depending on new releases to boost clinician adoption. However with providers facing new time and financial implications due to the American Reinvestment Act, researchers say providers are more than ever con- cerned with vendors’ ability to deliver.
Product vision, delivery, performance and proof of adop- tion have become critical elements for providers today, says KLAS. So critical in fact that they can beat out contempo- rary vendor products.
KLAS’ report points to Epic’s ability to trump EMR wins by backing up their product with “good support, a solid product set and solid delivery.” Sales have reflected that vendors who are making good on their promises are also making out with a “win.”
Three Trends to Watch
Jason Hess, KLAS’ general manager of clinical research, and author of the Kuly 2009 report, points to key opportunities for clinical information system vendors going forward:
1. ARRA Requirements: Of all U.S. hospitals with at least 200-beds, 412 have either no CIS or legacy CIS. ARRA could spur these hospitals to seek a new one - one that will deliver CPOE.
2. Unusual Wins In these challenging times, timing is everything. Vendors should consider going after providers out- side their client base. With the over-400 bed market nearly carved out, the 200-400 bed market appears to be more open. 3. DELIVERY: Solid delivery can trump all other decision criteria. New sales match up very closely with vendors who are reported to be keeping their promises.
Opportunity abounds in EHRs
Cerner
Cerner Millennium
Cerner’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) is built upon the scalable, unified, person- centric Cerner Millennium architecture. Cerner’s solution functionality creates an enterprise-wide, multi-facility, longitudinal EHR that spans role and venue. Authorized physicians, nurses, pharmacists and lab technicians can all access one patient record at the same time—an impossible task with a cumbersome paper chart. With a single, integrated EHR, information is available whenever and wherever it’s needed.
“Adventist Health System has deployed the Cerner Millennium Hospital EHR across 32 sites in eight states. The Cerner Millennium EHR provides our clinicians with access to important patient information so they can make informed decisions about patient care.”
- Brent Snyder, chief information officer for Adventist Health System, Winter Park, Fla.
CliniComp
Essentris EMR
The Essentris EMR clinical workflow suite is the choice of leading health systems across the United States to document and manage patient care throughout their hospital. Designed to meet the Military Health System’s (MHS) stringent requirements for security and reliability and the practice needs of the individual caregiver in any clinical environment or acute care facility, the Essentris suite integrates all the information needed to manage patient care safely and efficiently.
“The Critical Care Unit at Swedish Medical Center has been using Clinicomp for their bedside nursing documentation for the past 20 years. If you were to ask nurses why they like to work in the CCU at Swedish, one of the first things they would tell you is “CliniComp Charting.” Clinicomp allows the bedside nurse to efficiently and thoroughly document patient data. As a clinician, it is wonderful to have technology at the bedside that really does make the end users job easier. The functionality that allows you to retain previous assessments and edit what has changed is fantastic. Having ClinComp interface with the bedside monitor and ventilator saves so much time transferring data from those systems. The system entry for IV medication that calculates infusion rate provides a patient safety mechanism. Nurses should not rely on their ability to complete calculations when they are busy and distracted. When nurses move away from Colorado and call us or return to visit us, they always remark how much they miss using Clinicomp. We love Clinicomp.”
- Ann Randall, director of critical care Swedish Medical Center, Englewood, Colo.
CPSI
CPSI Healthcare Information and Patient Care System
The CPSI Healthcare Information and Patient Care System is the most comprehensive and cost effective single-source electronic medical record (EMR) available today. Designed and developed from the ground-up by CPSI, this system changes the way community hospitals think about healthcare information technology. The CPSI System is a complete enterprise-wide information management solution as opposed to other systems that employ disparate stand-alone processing on a department-by-department basis.
Eclipsys
Sunrise Clinical Manager
Sunrise Clinical Manager includes a robust, fully integrated clinical information system for acute care and supporting settings. It includes: CPOE and clinical decision support and an integrated electronic health record (EHR) that connects clinicians and administrators with shared patient information and workflow to advance accuracy, efficiency and safety across settings, departments and locations. Integrated with a comprehensive offering of enterprise applications, the Eclipsys system maximizes electronic health record benefits by offering interoperable, fully connected care.
