SYDNEY – Australia-based IT company iSoft has announced that it is bringing its Lorenzo software to Apple's iPhone. The Lorenzo application allows medical professionals to access scans, x-rays, and patient records through a prototype that is due for release later this year.

Nurses using Lorenza can also directly register patient information such as pulse and temperature, making information instantly available.

iSoft's goal is to give physicians immediate access to <a href="/directory/electronic-health-record-ehr" target="_blank" class="directory-item-link">EHRs, according chief medical officer of iSoft, Michael Dahlweid, MD.

The news of the Lorenzo iPhone application comes just weeks after Apple announced the release of its iPad, a tablet-sized computer similar to devices already used in the clinical setting. Whether healthcare providers will adopt the iPad as a clinical device remains to be seen.

Feedback from the medical community will be important to the implementation of the product. "We are very excited about the potential of an application on both the iPhone and the iPad, but our healthcare customers can rest assured that we will be gathering their input before bringing the final version to market."
