GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA – Australia's Gold Coast Hospital has deployed a new solution to expand its cardiac care department to be ready for the new Gold Coast University Hospital, which is due to open in 2012.

The new facility will provide complex care, specialty services and clinical support as well as benefit from some extended research and teaching opportunities. The next three years will be focused on improving and increasing its cardiac care potential with addition of catheter labs, cardiac ultrasound and echocardiography systems.

The cardiac care cycle will be supported by CVIS software from Dutch-based Royal Philips Electronics.

“The modern practice of cardiology is complex, comprehensive and diverse due to the multiple different investigational and therapeutic modalities at play both in the clinical as well as academic realms. Managing a large and busy cardiology practice in a tertiary hospital is challenging,” said Professor Rohan Jayasinghe, chairman of cardiology at Griffith University and also chairman of medicine at Bond University, two institutions associated with the Queensland-based hospital.

“This is where a versatile, efficient and user-friendly cardiovascular information system becomes extremely important to provide the right solutions for effective and seamless operations,” he added.

Phillips CVIS software is designed to allow physicians to view a patient's tests or scan results from any PC network. The solutions enable them to file reports that are then accessible for review later on any system.

The CVIS system can integrate with Cardiac PACS Xcelera for access to imaging results. This also allows for images to be exported to other facilities for review.

“As a healthcare solutions provider our goal is to enable our users to provide the best support of their patients through every step of the cardiac care cycle. We consider the integration of the Philips CVIS solution across all areas of Gold Coast Hospital’s cardiac facilities as an example of what can be achieved,” said Harry van Dyk, managing director of Philips Healthcare Australasia.
