ATLANTA – Stonebranch is looking to rewrite the language of healthcare data protection.
The Atlanta-based developer of managed file transfer and job-scheduling technology has launched Scribbos, a secure business communications platform, used like e-mail, designed to allow healthcare entities to send messages, large files and images over the Internet.
“Healthcare has a special need right now,” said Nicole Shingler, director of healthcare solutions for Stonebranch. “With the massive adoption of electronic health records that’s going to happen, there’s a high demand for secure encryption. Patient information is extremely confidential … and the risks there aren’t just financial.”
Stonebranch, which was launched in 1999, has roughly 500 healthcare clients using the company’s Infitran product, which manages data across networks and organizations. Scribbos was developed earlier this year with the banking and healthcare industries in mind and launched in September in Amsterdam. The name is a combination of “scribe” and OS (for operating system).
In fact, Stonebranch executives have created their own language for Scribbos. Those using the technology are called “Scribbers,” and the process of sending encrypted data is called “Scribbing.” There are also “Super Scribbers,” or people who use the technology every day, and “Scribb and Go,” the process of communicating via Scribbos on a mobile platform like an iPhone.
Last month, Scribbos entered the healthcare lexicon through two new announcements. First, Stonebranch announced a partnership with GlobalCrypto to develop Scribbos: Intellicrypt, a desktop encryption solution designed to provide healthcare and other industry users with a desktop-based identity management and authentication solution. Company officials then announced a partnership with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation, in which the company would donate one dollar to the breast cancer organization for every person who signs up for a 14-day free trial of Scribbos.
Stonebranch has also earned recognition from industry analyst Gartner, Inc., which included the company in its September 2009 “magic Quadrant for Managed File Transfer” report.
“Companies should consider managed file transfer (MFT) suite vendors that meet short-term tactical and long-term strategic needs,” the report said. “It’s all too easy to react too quickly and procure and deploy technology that supports only one protocol or security standard. It’s much more prudent to deploy a product that can be easily expanded and upgraded to handle multiple protocols and multiple standards in a governed way that is fully auditable."
“We are dedicated to being the industry leader in secure business communications,” said Gert Adolphsen, executive vice president of Stonebranch. “In addition to making security a ‘given,’ Scribbos easily accommodates growth, eliminates maintenance and reduces the investment in infrastructure – all of which boosts companies’ returns on investment.”
