Continua Health Alliance to develop software for smartphones

June 15, 2010 | Mike Miliard, Managing Editor

BEAVERTON, OR – Continua Health Alliance officials say the company is creating an interoperable source code software library for mobile platforms.

The international organization of healthcare and technology companies has chosen Vignet, a Virginia-based provider of "person-centric" connected health platform and solutions, to develop this mobile Continua Enabling Source Library (mCESL), which will be made available to Continua Health Alliance members.

The reference software will offer the capability of seamlessly connecting a variety of interoperable personal health devices using everyday smartphones and health records. The program will grant Continua members access to a reference library, enabling them to use devices that provide individuals mobile access to care, contributing to the growing connected home health solutions ecosystem with the potential to significantly improve healthcare outcomes and deliver more affordable healthcare solutions.

"Continua is excited to work with Vignet on the development of this reference code library due to its emphasis on mobile consumer-centric healthcare," said Chuck Parker, executive director of Continua Health Alliance. "This is a key milestone in Continua’s mission to develop an ecosystem of personal connected healthcare devices that work seamlessly anytime, anywhere. It is another important tool to enable convenient data sharing for consistent monitoring of individuals’ health and wellness status that will help empower individuals to maintain greater responsibility for their health while also enabling healthcare providers to make more informed treatment decisions."

Having access to this mobile reference software will expand the ability of Continua members in delivering compelling products to both consumers and healthcare providers. This new development will enable Continua to have a significant and immediate impact on the roll-out of mobile connected healthcare systems by providing reference platforms and expanding the reach of standards-based connected health solutions, spurring innovation and removing barriers to global implementation and adoption.

"Allowing people to use their everyday mobile phones to manage and improve their health is a key step in advancing the healthcare industry towards a self-management and prevention model," said Praduman Jain, Vignet's CEO. "We are pleased to work with Continua to provide new reference software incorporating interoperable standards that will enable solutions for broad coverage of mobile devices and further position Continua Health Alliance as a leader in the personal connected health space."

At the completion of the Continua-Vignet project, Continua has set forth plans to work with platform developers on a formal rollout of the mCESL program within the open source community, another important step in Continua’s consumer-centric healthcare model.
