BOSTON – First, doctors were using mobile devices. Now, fundraisers at Children's Hospital Boston are asking donors to text their donations.
The hospital launched the campaign Friday with PSA announcements on You Tube, Facebook and Twitter.
Children's Hospital Boston' first text-message fund-raising campaign encourages New Englanders to "become a champion for Children's" by using text messaging to donate to the hospital's patient care, research and community outreach initiatives.
The social-media campaign targets donors of all ages, demographics and economic means. With each text donation, $5 will be donated to Children's Hospital Boston.
"Children's Hospital Boston understands that every donation, large or small, makes a difference for our patients and their families," said Carola Cadley, the Children's Hospital Trust's associate vice president of corporate development and marketing. "We hope that 'Text 4 Kids' will be a valuable resource in our effort to close the gap between sickness and health for children."
The campaign features prominent Boston athletes and celebrities, including New England Revolution forward Taylor Twellman, outdoorsman and NESN personality Charlie Moore and The Dropkick Murphys singer Ken Casey. The first of a multi-part PSA series featuring Moore, known as the "Mad Fisherman," and former hospital patient and cancer survivor Michael Fiacco, 11, is airing on NESN and can be viewed on YouTube.
"Everyone's been touched in some way by Children's Hospital Boston – including me," said Moore. "I'm excited to be part of a campaign that makes giving easy, regardless of who you are and what you do for a living. Together, these small donations can make a difference."
The instructions are simple – users dial the number "4," then the letters "KIDS" to shortcode 20222 to make a $5 donation.
