WASHNGTON – A little more than half of Americans say healthcare IT should be a top priority for the next president, according to a new Kaiser Permanente survey. The research also revealed that Americans continue to have concerns about privacy.

Kaiser tapped market research company StrategyOne to conduct the nationwide survey to gauge Americans' awareness and perceptions of electronic health records. Kaiser released the survey to coincide with National Health IT Week June 9-13 in the nation's capital.

Key findings indicate that Americans are using some basic online tools for health information.

The survey was taken May 8-11.

Key findings include:

• 65 percent of respondents have gone online to learn about a medical condition;

• 38 percent have used their insurance company's online

tools to learn more about their care, up from 29 percent in 2007;

• 47 percent have a preference for doctors who use EHRs;

• 61 percent have a preference for insurance companies that employ EHRs;and

• 51 percent agree that healthcare IT should be a top priority for the next president to ensure that all Americans have access to their own personal medical records electronically.
