When I attended the Healthcare IT Leadership Summit a few months ago here in Atlanta, I had the pleasure of seeing old friends, meeting new ones, and learning about up and coming technologies - from veteran healthcare IT folks and fresh-faced students, too. One company in particular caught the crowd’s eyes late in the day.

Robert Half International, a leading staffing firm, recently conducted a survey which spanned multiple industries. There are concerns about the candidate pool and that there won't be enough qualified candidates to meet demand. IT is one of the fields reporting difficulties.

As I've mentioned before in posts, my background includes service as a hospital risk manager. So, I'm an advocate of techniques to minimize risk. However, I've learned of one that really goes a bit too far and actually takes us a few steps back away from the goal of transparency in healthcare.

Two weeks ago it was reported that a think tank founded by GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich accumulated over $37 million in eight years from major healthcare companies and industry groups. According to The Washington Post, these millions came with special access to the former House speaker, as well as other benefits.

I was interviewed for an article on AIS Health that came out last week. The title of this article -- on health care social media and regulatory and legal issues that health care providers may face in using these tools -- struck me as being tinged with hysteria.
