Beacon Communities are funded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Beacon Community Cooperative Agreement Program. The program provides funding to 17 selected communities through the United States that have made progress in developing secure, privateand accurate systems of EHR adoption and health information exchange.

The Beacon program supports communities to build and strengthen their health information technology infrastructure and exchange capabilities to improve care coordination, increase qualityand slow the growth of healthcare spending. The 17 communities focus on specific and measurable improvement goals in three areas for health systems: quality, cost-efficiencyand population health to demonstrate the ability of health IT to transform local healthcare systems.
