The AMA has promoted scientific advancement, improved public health, and supported doctor/patient relationships for more than 160 years. Today, its mission continues to be promoting the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health through its three core values: leadership, integrity and ethical behavior, and excellence. It is the largest association of medical doctors and medical students in the US.
The association publishes the Journal of the American Medical Association, which has the largest circulation of any weekly medical journal in the world, as well as a list of physician specialty codes, which are the standard method for identifying physician and practice specialties in the United States. The AMA Foundation, one of its many charitable activities, provides approximately $1 million annually in tuition assistance to financially needy students.
