The hiring of key personnel in healthcare IT is critical for the successful execution of quality healthcare; and never before has technology been infused into healthcare in an attempt to streamline its delivery. Recently we referenced an interesting observation about three health IT hiring trends. First, employers realize transferable (skills acquired in the past that can be used in present) and soft (like communication) skills are becoming important in the workforce. Second, job seekers find broadening their job search, beyond one particular job description or type of job, is more beneficial than narrowing the search into one job description and third, employers see the value of incumbent training-type programs, realizing the potential of current employees and preparing them for future health IT positions (this, in turn, creates a loyalty program within an organization).
Additionally, quoted were the following facts: 1 in 9 US jobs will be in healthcare by 2020 and we will see a 66% IT staff increase in the next year. These statistics bode well for those seeking employment and career changes focusing on healthcare and in particular healthcare IT career paths. Education is the cornerstone of any career and also important in career progression; these are the development offerings that HIMSS Professional Development, Career Services is supporting.
To ascertain how impactful these statistics are, the HIMSS Social Media team shared a Staffing and Health IT Adoption infographic on Facebook that incorporated the above statistics and at past count, accrued over 3,300 people (more than half of the HIMSS Facebook audience) with at least 62 likes, 39 shares, and 9 comments.
Knowing these facts and knowing a career needs consistent cultivation, HIMSS has also created blogs, White Papers and a Health Information Technology Body of Knowledge (HITBOK) which are all various educational pieces to further support career concepts. Topics such as having good listening skills, connecting and networking with others, sharing information and always planning for a chosen career path whenever possible are discussed and referenced as well.
