Are Job Boards Dead?

I recently attended a webinar which was almost like a State of the Union address for job boards and online recruiting. Just in the past two years this medium has evolved. The rise in unemployment has sent job seekers to the Internet in droves. Social media has started to play an increasing role in recruitment as well. LinkedIn especially has become the land for virtual headhunters.

With all of these components in play, a rumor is going around that job boards are dead. This isn’t true.

There has been a shift though, from traditional “big box” job boards to niche or association sites. Typically, when you post a position on a big box job board you get flooded with applicants, many of whom are not the right fit. The main shift in the trend to niche/association job boards is that they provide quality over quantity.
Time and money are saved when posting a position viewed by the desired, targeted audience. The chances of employers or recruiters receiving applicants without the required skill set greatly decreases. Job seekers are catching on. I’ve witnessed this trend in the increased usage of the HIMSS JobMine resume bank. Just this May alone, over 500 new resumes were added.

We use traditional means to promote the jobs on our job board (ie: print, e-newsletters), but we’ve also incorporated social media as an added value. Employers, I’d like to hear from you…are there specific job board features or additional online methods you use when looking for the right candidate?

E.J. Fechenda is the Audience Data Manager for MedTech Media. Since 2008 she has helped manage Healthcare Finance JobSpot and Healthcare IT JobSpot - now merged with HIMSS JobMine. She is not a Human Resources professional, nor a healthcare expert, but over the years she’s accumulated a lot of feedback and insight from both job seekers and employers alike. Each week E.J. will deliver a blog based on this information. One week will be employer focused and the next week, job seeker focused.
