Water-cooler discussions fuel camaraderie at Beaufort

November 29, 2011 | Mike Moran, Project Editor

RANK: #4 (MEDIUM HOSPITALS)
South Carolina's beautiful intra-coastal waterway may be a nice selling point, but Beaufort Memorial Hospital's IT department has more going for it than location, location, location. For the past 11 years, Beaufort Memorial has been named one of the nation's "Most Wired Hospitals."

"People like to do projects that are interesting, and we definitely do that," said CIO Ed Ricks. For example, two years ago, the team installed a new software package in the ER department. The move dramatically improved billing efficiency and resulted in a bottom-line contribution of about $2 million a year.

When it comes to salary, the department is competitive, but doesn't overpay. Employees find value in having the full support of hospital leadership, and working in a department where fun and achievement go hand in hand. "I never have a problem when I see water-cooler talk, which I think encourages camaraderie," Ricks said. "People are measured by their productivity, not by sitting at their desks from 9 to 5."
