RANK: #5 (SMALL HOSPITALS)
Empowerment is the name of the game in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital's IT department. And for Susan Godesky, director of IT, that means professional development: cross training, learning from fellow employees and using the hospital's reimbursement fund to pay for continuing education classes.
Add to that Godesky's efforts to be accessible and to seek out staff opinions on IT projects. The end result: competent, capable employees willing to roll up their sleeves and do the work that needs to get down. "If you empower them, they see what they are capable of," Godesky said. "I think everyone is happier."
The IT team's empowerment was on full display earlier this year. "I went on a three-week vacation and they ran the department without me," Godesky said. "They had to deal with Hurricane Irene and did great. There were problems with power, flooding and there was an earthquake! If we'd had fire and locust, we'd have had everything."
