MedCentral: Employees enjoy the forefront of healthcare technology

November 29, 2011 | Michelle McNickle, Web Content Producer

RANK: #9 (LARGE HOSPITALS)
Mike Mistretta, vice president and CIO at MedCentral Health System, doesn't feel his department needs to focus on finding good employees.

That's because most of his team members are tenured and have been with MedCentral for years. "The reason for that is we tend to be on the forefront of technology in healthcare," says Mistretta. "From an IT perspective, we're doing things a lot of larger institutions would like to be doing."

In fact, the organization was the first in the country to be certified for meaningful use – a feat that couldn't have been accomplished without the support of a solid IT department. "We're also building our own fiber network, and we have a virtual desktop environment that we're rolling out," said Mistretta. "That keeps things interesting for people; there's a level of satisfaction that comes with that. We do a lot of work with the software, so on the analyst side, that keeps things fresh."
