At Holy Name Medical Center, the IT department is all about balance. Employees there "feel fortunate, and there's a great balance of work and home life," says CIO Mike Skvarenin.

Deb Ross, clinical informatics specialist, agrees – and adds that a sense of collaboration makes the workplace a pleasant one. "We have employees who have been here for a long time," she says. "We're growing, but I think it's a mixed group in terms of, well, everything." IT employees support each other in more ways than one, and they carry a sense of teamwork beyond their department to throughout the center. "At other hospitals I worked at, it's seen as IT versus everyone else," said Skvarenin.

"We see success because we work with both our end users and the other departments. We're approachable, and we know who we are." Added Ross: "We're not the geeks hiding somewhere in the basement."
