RANK: #8 (MEDIUM HOSPITALS)
The people who work at Indiana University Health Goshen are not employees. They're colleagues, and that's an important distinction, said Dolph Voelker, director of information services.
It's all part The Uncommon Leader (TUL) program the hospital implemented a number of years ago. TUL empowers (and incentivizes) colleagues to be creative and innovative problem solvers. It works.
Over the past decade, colleagues throughout the hospital have submitted $30 million in cost-saving ideas that improved efficiency and patient care. "I think we've taken a lot of our culture for granted," Voelker said. "When new IT colleagues come in from other hospitals, they say, 'Management actually listens to us. We have a voice here.'" Add to that an IT department where colleagues enjoy each other, and this workplace seems to offer the best of both worlds. "The work is enjoyable, and the people make it a pleasure to work here," Voelker said.
