RANK: #4 (SMALL HOSPITALS)
The IT employees at Frisbie Memorial Hospital work hard, but they also cut loose from time to time. Earlier this year, the department won a "non-talent" contest. "My PACS administrator choreographed a routine -- it was a blast!" said Dee Griffin Sheing, director, information services.
When it comes to workplace satisfaction, having "support from the top down," can't be overstated. On those times when IT staff must work late into the night, for example, it's not unusual for a top administrator to be there with them, sometimes providing pizza. "When your boss is with you, it means something," Sheing said.
Importantly, once a month the department meets to discuss ongoing projects to determine who needs help and/or additional resources. "Enthusiasm is important, as are loyalty and wanting to do a good job, but communication is key," Sheing said. "I can't tell you the dollars we have saved because someone said, 'Why are we doing it this way?'"
